Long download times: You have 30 seconds to retain your visitor. Large graphics take a long time to download. Therefore, graphics should be small and optimized for use on the web. Small graphics should only be used in such a way to give your visitors more information about you business.
Image Maps on main page: Image maps may look great, but they usually are large graphics that will increase download time. Navigation through out the site can be hampered if you do not include text links to go along with each graphic links on the image map. Sites with image maps usually do not rank high on search engines. Search engines do not index graphics in their databases. They only index the content or text of the web page.
Do not use animated graphics: Animated graphics can be very annoying. Some usability studies have indicated that some people have covered the animated graphics with their hands just to read the text on the web page.
Do not use Frames: First of all search engines can not index web sites with frames. Also a visitor can not bookmark any of your pages that are within the frames. The bookmark will only take them to your main page.
Do not use Java: Java dramatically increases download times in most cases. Java is not supported in all browsers and some people even turn Java off on their browsers to increase download times. One might consider if there are other web tools that can be utilized to make the web site simpler in design and still get the point across.
Mis-spelled words: It can be very annoying to see mis-spelled words on a web page. This does not give your site that professional look. Spell checkers are available on just about all HTML editors and word processing programs today. Use them! As a double check, always have someone you know proof read your documents.
Check for broken links: Verify all links on your site to make sure that all links are working correctly. This will allow your visitors to navigate freely.
Poor navigation: Large sites can be very difficult to move around in. Using a table of contents or a site map will allow the visitor to have an idea of where they need to go. Visitors tend to get lost on sites that are not very clear in their navigation.
Use text links: Do not rely on graphic links only to move from one page to another. Always use text links as well. When using text links, do not be afraid to use short sentences. This will allow your visitor to have a better understanding of where they want to go instead of just a one word text link.
Content not updated regularly: We live in a fast moving information age. If the content on your web page is not kept current, your web page may be outdated to the point of obscurity.
